DKI Jakarta
The Capital City of DKI
Jakarta is “Jakarta”
Jakarta
is the dynamic capital city of the Republic of Indonesia. The center of
government and business. One of the highly populated urban areas in Indonesia
with it’s about 12 million people gathered from all those diverse ethnic and
cultural groups that’s make Indonesia. Jakarta offers a variety of
entertainment ranging from cultural performances to clubs feature international
singers and bands.Jakarta is a paradoxical melting pot of Old and New and
reflects it’s people, architecture and history. Here will find towering
skyscrapers and modern shopping malls. For history lovers and explorers,
Jakarta’s historical Kota district and many bustling markets will keep us
enthralled.
Jakarta is the social, cultural, economic and
political hub of the nation. It is home to many of the country’s finest
research institutions, educational facilities and cultural organizations.
Jakarta is the uniquely both the seat of national as well as regional
government. Jakarta strategically positioned on the west side of the island of
Java, the Capital City is the principal gateway to the rest of Indonesia. A
side from being the seat of government, it is also on of the nation’s most
important centers of commerce and industry. Being a nerve center of such vital
importance to the nations, political and economic life, it is not surprising
that some of the best facilities of accommodation, travel and
telecommunications infrastructures are available in Jakarta.
Jakarta is far from being the cold,
impersonal city that such a description might suggest. Almost 500 years old,
the capital city bears a warm personality, molded by centuries of contact with
peoples, cultures and creeds from all part of the archipelago and the
world. From Jakarta, sophisticated land, air and sea transport is available to
the rest of the country. Jakarta has proudly developed into one of Asia’s most
prominent metropolitan centers and now going to Cosmopolitan centers. Jakarta’s 20,000 hotel rooms at cut price
rates. Over 30 golf courses in and around Jakarta. Good news for business and
travelers. Jakarta has undergone dramatic growth.
Jakarta’s history dates back as far as the 5th
century. Long before the arrival of the first Europeans, Jakarta was known to
seafarers from Arabia and Asia as an important trading port called Sunda
Kelapa. The first confirmed record of inhabitants in the area comes from a Tugu
inscription which reefers to a community of the Taruma Nagara Kingdom living
along the north coast near what later became known as Sunda Kelapa.
Moslem forces led by Prince Fatahillah from
neighboring sultanate of Cirebon conquered the port. The Prince Fatahillah
after assault the Portuguese navy fleet was destroyed. Fatahillah change the
named of the Sunda Kelapa port to Jayakarta, meaning “Great Victory”, this event
took place on June 22, 1527, a date
which was officially recognized as the birth of the city of Jakarta, when the
harbor town of Sunda Kelapa by the conquering Prince Fatahillah.
Under the aggressive leadership of Jan
Pieterszoon Coen, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) proceeded forcibly to take
possession of the town of Jayakarta completely destroyed and renamed it Batavia
on May 30, 1619, in it place, they founded the city of Batavia which began as a
small fortified trading post, but eventually grew to came the capital of the
biggest Dutch overseas colony, the Netherlands East Indies. Dutch forces
mustering at Onrust island in the Jayakarta Bay, launched an all-out attack on
the port. Dutch colonial control Indonesia continued for over three centuries
until the outbreak of World War II when Japanese occupying forces took over.
When the Javanese imperial forces invaded the
Indies at the beginning of World War II, they renamed the city Jakarta. At the
end of the war, it was here that the Indonesian nationalist leaders proclaimed
the country’s independence, with Merdeka
or the Indonesian Declaration of Independence. The city name was finally
changed to Jakarta. This long and rather turbulent history has left it’s stamp
on the face of the city. Jakarta’s architecture, for example, displays the
various influences, Indonesian and foreign, which have over the centuries come
to these shores. Many buildings are landmarks of history.
Jakarta has own unique people and culture
known as Betawi (meaning Batavia). Reflecting influences from as far away as
India, Portugal, Arabia, Japan, China, Britain and the Malay Peninsula. Betawi
culture has it’s own music, costumes, language and cuisine which reflect
Jakarta’s unique identity, not only a melting pot of local cultures but also
international cultures as well. Victory on June 22, 1527, marked the founding
of modern Jakarta and is celebrated annually by the city.
Today, Jakarta’s face is rapidly changing to
accommodate the demands of modern life. The increased appreciation of the
irreplaceable value of their heritage about Jakarta seems to guarantee that the
city’s soul will not be lost.

September, at Setu Babakan, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, we will see many
spontaneous Betawinese. And, the other festival of Betawi, there is
“Abang-None” election.
The Sport
Activities Center
The
biggest sport activities center in Indonesia is “Istora Senayan” or “Gelora
Bung Karno”. We can find not only sport facilities but also the head of
organizations. Soccer, Volley Ball, Basket Ball, and athletics are kinds of
sports which the facilities equipped here and also the other sports.Jakarta
offers the pleasures more than 16 world class golf and around Jakarta are kept

enormous Senayan Stadium. The complex opened in 1962, accommodates crowds up to
120.000 and includes the Main Stadium, the Istora Sport Hall, and a
championship swimming pool.
Health
and fitness centers, swimming pools and tennis courts are found in 5-star
hotels, while horse riding, white water rafting and trekking could be enjoyed a
short distance away from the city. On the working days, the athletes do
exercise every morning and afternoon. But on holidays, thousands of Jakarta
citizens come and do exercise here also come to look for non-pollution air. And
other a favorite place for very early morning jogging, and a chance to see
people from all walks of life, is at the base of Monas, the National Monument.
Also the writer of this book is always come and joins them. Sometimes in the
morning or the afternoon.
Other Interest are
- Cinema: Movie
theatres are a more affordable escape at around Rp 50,000 for a plush seat
in any of the capital's shopping malls. Beware of the heavy hand of the
Indonesian censor though. The price of popcorn and drinks are exorbitant.
Several other cinemas also show Indian, Chinese and Indonesian movies. And
the lesser ones also exhibit Indonesian B-Movies with erotic themes (still
heavily censored). The largest chain of cinemas in Indonesia are 21 group,
Blitz Megaplex and Cineplex 21.
- Fitness centre: Large
hotels provide free fitness centres for guests. Some hotels have sauna,
spa, tennis court and jogging track. They are also available in shopping
malls.
- Golf: Golf is
the number one pastime of the upper class in Indonesia. It is relatively
cheap by Western standards. Green fees can go as low as Rp 100,000 on
weekdays, although the better courses are twice that, and weekend rates
are considerably steeper at Rp 400,000 and up.
- Bowling: Most
alleys are found in shopping malls. The fee for a game is US$2-3. Guest
can rent bowling shoes etc. The length of the lanes are 32 ft.
- Football: (ie,
Soccer) It is not advisable to watch any live football match in Jakarta,
because the Jakmania, Persija Jakarta's ultras often turn into
rioters when facing Persitara's North Jak and Persib's Viking.
During and after certain soccer games, foreign tourists should also not go
near the Lebak Bulus Stadium, the site of similar feats by lesser teams.
Jakarta also has plenty choices of Futsal fields in many areas. Dirt and
grass makeshift fields are abundant in residential areas, and can be
crowded with players, onlookers and vendors, especially on weekend
afternoons. In these casual games, anyone can simply ask to jump in or
relax.
- Drifting: (ie, Slot
cars) There's a drifting circuit on top of Mal Artha Gading (MAG)
- Karaoke: One of
the main entertainment program in Asia. With the most popular chains
spread throughout Jakarta, such as Inul Vista (Sarinah, Plaza
Semanggi, Kelapa Gading, etc), Happy Puppy (La Piazza, etc), and NAV
(Kelapa Gading, etc). Expect to pay as low as Rp 60,000/hr+tax for a 6
person room. The word "keluarga" means family in Indonesian.
That term differentiates the family-type karaoke from the potentially more
risque variety.
- Badminton.
As one of the powerhouses in
badminton, Jakarta has a multitude of badminton courts, ranging from the
national venues at the Senayan Complex to the suburban halls which cater
to both futsal and badminton. Most of them have wood-panel flooring, and
are maintained in reasonably good condition. Lighting is strictly
functional and is below par in comparison with standard badminton halls.
The best way to find a playing venue (and players) is to post a request on
badmintoncentral, the global badminton forum. It has a lot of members from
Indonesia who would be happy to provide directions to a local hall. People
play almost every evening - so, walk in, strike up a conversation with the
group's captain, and expect to be accommodated in their group for the
evening's session. If the captain refuses payment (usually less than Rp
20,000), it is polite to buy the players a round of soft-drinks (teh-botol
is a good choice). Be warned that it is common for Indonesians to eat,
smoke, drink and nap by the side of the court. So, watch your footing!
Accommodation
The
capital city has a wide choice of the hotels, which are managed by well-known
international chains. The first five are rated five star and diamond, white the
reminder four stars. All three and two star hotels in Jakarta have air-conditioned

of those in the three star, categories have swimming pools, nightclubs and
shopping arcades. Most of the one star hotel has air-conditioned rooms, with
